## What is GP, GPA and CGPA?

For the sake of those that don’t know what they are, I will quickly run through their basic meanings.

Grade Point (GP): This is the product of the point weighing and the credit hour(s)/unit for any given course.

Grade Point Average (GPA): It is the sum of grade point divided by the sum of credit hour/course unit which is the average performance for a semester.

Here we can say GPA is the measure of students academic performance for a particular academic section (semester).

Cumulative Grade point Average (CGPA): This is the average, GPA for the two semesters (called a full academic session).

## Differences Between GPA and CGPA.

Of course they are both measures of average grade of a student but they exist differences between them.

The difference between GPA and CGPA is that;  GPA is used for shorter periods, like a term or a semester. While CGPA on the other hand is the average grades used for the longer periods or the cumulative/final average for an entire academic experience.

## Grade Score Remarks.

 Total score(100%) Grade Grade Point(GP) 100 – 70 A 5.00 69 – 60 B 4.00 59 – 50 C 3.00 49 – 45 D 2.00 44 – 0 F 0.00

## How To Calculate GPA And CGPA.

Let’s take for instance you are a fresher and just started you 100L in mechanical engineering in a Nigerian University. At the end of the first semester your grades were as follows:

### Sample 1st semester 100 level GPA

 Course CU TT Grade GP QP MTH101 3 68 B 4.00 12 ENG111 1 57 C 3.00 3 PHY101 3 77 A 5.00 15 GSS101 2 71 A 5.00 10 CHM101 4 80 A 5.00 20 PHY191 3 69 B 4.00 12 STA101 3 92 A 5.00 15 Total 16 – – – 87

Summarily, the student did well in the first semester of study.
→ The Total Course Unit  for 100 level first Semester is 3 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 19

→ Total Quality Point for 100 level first Semester( Gotten by multiplying GP by CU): 12 + 3 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 12 + 15 = 87 ₹
→ The GPA of the 100L year 1 is gotten by dividing the total Quality Point by the total course unit. Now, it should be 87/19 which gives: 4.58  —  to 2 significant figures. That is your first semester GPA.

We are done with calculations related to the first semester. Remember, you can’t get a CGPA without going through two or more semesters. Let’s move on to the second semester of the same level.

### Sample 2nd semester 100 level GPA

 Course CU TT Grade GP QP MTH112 3 73 A 5.00 15 ENG112 1 47 D 2.00 2 PHY102 3 75 A 5.00 15 GSS112 2 70 A 5.00 10 CHM102 4 67 B 4.00 16 MTH104 3 50 C 3.00 9 GSS122 2 82 A 5.00 10 Total 18 – – – 77

→ Now, the total course unit  for 100 level second semester is 3 +1 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 18
→ The total quality point for 100 level second semester is 15 + 2 + 15 + 10 + 16 + 9 + 10 = 77.
→ The second semester GPA = 77/18 = 4.38.

Now your total year one CGPA = total 1st semester and 2nd semester 100L quality point divided by the total credit units.

Let’s check,

Total credit unit first semester = 19; that of second semester = 18; TT= 37.

Total quality point of first semester = 87; that of second semester = 77; TT= 164.

Now your 100L CGPA = 164/37 = 4.43

What if you’ve entered into year two, how is it done? Let’s do one more!

### Sample 1st semester 200 level GPA

 Course CU TT Grade GP QP ENG212 3 83 A 5.00 15 ENG112 1 37 F 0.00 0 MEC232 3 72 A 5.00 15 GSS212 2 70 A 5.00 10 ENG241 3 78 A 5.00 15 EEE202 3 80 A 5.00 15 CIV212 3 82 A 5.00 15 Total 18 – – – 85

→ The total course unit for 200 level first Semester is 3 +1 + 3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18
→ The total quality point for 200 level first semester is 15 + 0 + 15 + 10 + 15 + 15 + 15 = 85.
→ The 200L first semester GPA = 85/18 = 4.72

Now your CGPA on completion of 100L and 200L first semester = total 100L & 200L 1st semester quality point divided by the total credit units.

Total credit unit first semester = 19; that of second semester = 18; that of 200L 1st semester = 18; TT= 55.

Total quality point of first semester = 87; that of second semester = 77; that of 200L second semester = 85; TT= 249.

Now your CGPA = 249/55 = 4.53
